Smith Machine Exercises

The Smith machine runs the bar on a fixed rail with catch hooks at every height, which removes the balance demand and gives you a bailout on every rep. That combination lets you take a squat, press, or row closer to failure alone than you safely could with a free bar. Because the path is fixed you can also stand in positions a free barbell would never allow, which is how the Smith is used to bias specific muscles.

Why train with Smith machine

  • Catch hooks at every height mean you can train alone to near failure
  • No balance demand, so all effort goes into the target muscle
  • Stand in foot positions a free barbell would not let you hold
  • A safe bridge between machine work and free-weight barbell lifting
