Built around unbroken cable tension, Cable Judo Flip works as a standalone core block and builds midsection control under load.

How to do Cable Judo Flip

  1. Stand facing the cable machine with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. Hold the cable handle with both hands at chest level, palms facing down.
  3. Engage your core and rotate your torso to the right, pulling the cable across your body.
  4. As you rotate, pivot your back foot and allow your hips to rotate naturally.
  5. Extend your arms fully and finish the movement by flipping the cable handle over your shoulder.
  6. Return to the starting position by reversing the movement, rotating your torso back to the center.
  7. Repeat the movement on the opposite side.
  8. Continue alternating sides for the desired number of repetitions.

Cable Judo Flip Sets and Reps by Goal

Strength

5 sets of 2-4 reps with 3-5 minutes of rest. Move the pin one plate once the last rep feels easy.

Hypertrophy

4-5 sets of 6-10 reps with 60-90 seconds of rest. Step back until the stack never rests at the top.

Endurance

3-4 sets of 18-25 reps with 30-45 seconds of rest. Stretch the return phase before adding weight.

Common Cable Judo Flip Mistakes

Letting the stack touch down between reps

Stop just short of the stack so tension never resets.

Chasing rep count until the lower back arches away

End the set at the first rep where the ribcage flares, not at failure.

Grinding heavy singles when the plan called for quality reps

Hold the prescribed effort so the rest of the week stays trainable.

Cable Judo Flip — Frequently Asked Questions

How do you do the Cable Judo Flip?

Stand facing the cable machine with your feet shoulder-width apart. Hold the cable handle with both hands at chest level, palms facing down. Engage your core and rotate your torso to the right, pulling the cable across your body. Use a cable machine and keep the movement controlled through the full range. The animated GIF above shows the complete rep at normal speed.

What muscles does the Cable Judo Flip work?

The Cable Judo Flip primarily targets the abs. It is classified as a core exercise and is performed with a cable machine.

How many sets and reps of the Cable Judo Flip should I do?

For muscle growth: 4-5 sets of 6-10 reps with 60-90 seconds of rest. Step back until the stack never rests at the top. Adjust the load rather than the rep target if form breaks down before the final rep.

Is the Cable Judo Flip good for beginners?

Not usually. The Cable Judo Flip is an advanced movement that assumes existing strength and joint control. Build up through easier core progressions first, then add this once the basics feel comfortable.

What can I do instead of the Cable Judo Flip?

Try the Twisted Leg Raise, Kettlebell Advanced Windmill or the Lever Seated Crunch. Each trains the abs with a similar movement pattern, so you can swap based on the equipment you have available.
