Ab Wheel Rollout
Ab Wheel Rollout trades complexity for a trunk that resists rather than folds, and it fits at the end of any workout.
How to do Ab Wheel Rollout
- Hold the Ab Roller with both hands and kneel on the floor.
- Now place the ab roller on the floor in front of you so that you are on all your hands and knees (as in a kneeling push up position). This will be your starting position.
- Slowly roll the ab roller straight forward, stretching your body into a straight position. Tip: Go down as far as you can without touching the floor with your body. Breathe in during this portion of the movement.
- After a pause at the stretched position, start pulling yourself back to the starting position as you breathe out. Tip: Go slowly and keep your abs tight at all times.
Ab Wheel Rollout Sets and Reps by Goal
Strength
4 sets of 6-8 reps at your hardest clean leverage, resting 2-3 minutes. Hold the end position for a beat once reps come easily.
Hypertrophy
4 sets of 12-18 reps with 60 seconds of rest. Add reps first, then slow the lowering phase.
Endurance
3 sets of 25-30 reps with 30-45 seconds of rest. Change leverage or elevation before you add load.
Common Ab Wheel Rollout Mistakes
Adding reps forever instead of making the movement harder
Change leverage, elevation, or tempo once you clear your rep range.
Holding your breath through the hardest part of the rep
Exhale as you brace so the ribs stay down and pressure stays controlled.
Repeating the same load and rep scheme for months
Pick one variable, load, reps, or tempo, and push it every week.
