Bodyweight Core Exercises

The core does two jobs: it flexes the spine and it resists the spine being moved. Most people only train the first. This collection covers both, with crunch and knee-raise variations for flexion and planks, Pallof-style holds, and pelvic tilt work for anti-rotation and anti-extension. All of it runs on the floor with no equipment, and the hardest progressions here are static holds rather than rep counts.

Why train core with bodyweight

  • Trains spinal flexion and anti-rotation, not just crunches
  • Hanging knee raises load the lower abs harder than any floor work
  • Pelvic tilt and plank work directly transfers to bracing under a heavy bar
  • No equipment, no setup, fits at the end of any session

Bodyweight Core Training FAQ

How often should I train abs?

Two to four short sessions a week. The abs are a muscle like any other and recover in a day or two, so daily high-volume ab work is more likely to leave you sore than to build anything. Ten to fifteen hard sets a week spread across a few sessions covers it, especially since heavy squatting and pressing already load the midline.

Do bodyweight core exercises burn belly fat?

No. Fat loss comes from a calorie deficit and is distributed by genetics, not by which muscle you train. Core work builds and strengthens the abdominal muscles underneath, which is what becomes visible once body fat drops. Train the core for strength and manage nutrition for the fat.

What is the best bodyweight core exercise?

There is no single best one, because the core has separate jobs. A hanging knee raise is the strongest loader of the lower abs, a hard plank variation is the best anti-extension work, and a Pallof-style hold is the best anti-rotation work. Picking one of each covers the muscle far better than doing three kinds of crunch.
