Kettlebell core work is not crunching, it is holding a load overhead while the rest of you bends. The windmill family, from the basic version through the double and advanced variants, keeps one bell locked out above the shoulder while you hinge sideways towards the floor, which asks the obliques to control side flexion while the shoulder stays stable under load. The bent press does the same thing under heavier weight, and the figure 8 trains rotation by passing the bell between the legs under speed.

What muscles does a kettlebell windmill work?

The obliques and the deep trunk muscles do most of the work controlling the descent and driving you back upright. The hamstrings of the front leg get a strong stretch, and the shoulder holding the bell overhead works hard isometrically the whole time. It is closer to a full-body position drill than an isolated ab exercise.

How do I learn the windmill safely?

Start with no weight and one hand pointing at the ceiling, then progress to a light bell in the low hand before ever holding one overhead. Keep the overhead arm locked and your eyes on the bell throughout, push the hip of the loaded side out, and stop the descent at the point where the lower back would round.

Is kettlebell core work enough on its own?

It covers side flexion, rotation, and overhead stability very well, and covers spinal flexion barely at all. If you want the rectus abdominis loaded directly, add a crunch or rollout variation. The combination gives you a core trained in all the directions it actually has to work in.
