Lever Back Extension turns a fixed machine groove into control through the whole range — for lifters with a base already built.

How to do Lever Back Extension

  1. Adjust the machine to fit your body size and range of motion.
  2. Sit on the machine with your back against the pad and your feet secured.
  3. Place your hands on the handles or grip bars.
  4. Engage your core and slowly lean forward, allowing your back to round slightly.
  5. Pause for a moment at the bottom position, feeling a stretch in your lower back.
  6. Using your back muscles, slowly raise your torso back to the starting position.
  7. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Lever Back Extension Sets and Reps by Goal

5 sets of 2-4 reps with 3-5 minutes of rest. Add one plate only when the full range stays smooth.

Hypertrophy

4-5 sets of 6-10 reps with 60-90 seconds of rest. Control the return instead of letting the stack drop.

Endurance

3-4 sets of 18-25 reps with 30-45 seconds of rest. Match the seat and pad settings every session.

Common Lever Back Extension Mistakes

Control the return for the same count as the working phase.

Letting a nearby joint take over as the set gets hard

Lever Back Extension — Frequently Asked Questions

How do you do the Lever Back Extension?

Adjust the machine to fit your body size and range of motion. Sit on the machine with your back against the pad and your feet secured. Place your hands on the handles or grip bars. Use a leverage machine and keep the movement controlled through the full range. The animated GIF above shows the complete rep at normal speed.

What muscles does the Lever Back Extension work?

The Lever Back Extension primarily targets the spine. It is classified as a back exercise and is performed with a leverage machine.

How many sets and reps of the Lever Back Extension should I do?

For muscle growth: 4-5 sets of 6-10 reps with 60-90 seconds of rest. Control the return instead of letting the stack drop. Adjust the load rather than the rep target if form breaks down before the final rep.

Is the Lever Back Extension good for beginners?

Not usually. The Lever Back Extension is an advanced movement that assumes existing strength and joint control. Build up through easier back progressions first, then add this once the basics feel comfortable.

What can I do instead of the Lever Back Extension?

Try the Band Straight Leg Deadlift, Upward Facing Dog or the Exercise Ball Back Extension With Rotation. Each trains the spine with a similar movement pattern, so you can swap based on the equipment you have available.

Is the Lever Back Extension the same as the machine back extension?

Yes. The Lever Back Extension is also commonly called the machine back extension. Different gyms and training programs label it differently, but "machine back extension" refer to this same movement.
