Machine Shoulder Exercises

Machine shoulder work solves the problem that ends most delt sessions early: the shoulder itself is not what fails, the balance and the lower back are. A lever shoulder press seats you against a pad with the path fixed, so you press until the delt quits and nothing else. The seated reverse fly stations are just as valuable for the rear delt, which is nearly impossible to isolate with a free weight without bending over and loading the spine at the same time.

Why train shoulder with machine

  • Press until the delt fails, not until your balance does
  • Seated reverse flies isolate rear delts without loading the spine
  • Back pad removes the lower-back demand of standing pressing
  • Single-arm press options load one side while the seat holds you square

Machine Shoulder Training FAQ

Is a machine shoulder press as good as a barbell press?

For growing the delts, close to it. What you lose is the whole-body bracing and the transfer to real overhead strength; what you gain is the ability to train close to failure safely and the removal of lower-back fatigue. Many lifters use a barbell press for the heavy work and a machine press for the higher-rep sets.

How do I set the seat height on a shoulder press machine?

Set it so the handles sit level with the top of your shoulders when you are seated with your back flat against the pad. Too low and you press from an uncomfortably deep position; too high and you lose the bottom half of the range that does the most for the delt.

Why use a machine reverse fly instead of dumbbells?

Because a dumbbell reverse fly requires you to hold a bent-over position, and the lower back usually gives out before the rear delts do. A seated machine takes the spine out of the equation entirely, so you can add load and reps until the rear delt is genuinely trained.
